- The project team participated at the formation of the international working groups:
- Networking of Ecosystem Sciences in South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula – coordinators Dr. Soon Gyu Hong (KOPRI) and Dr. Angelica Casanova-Katny (INACH).
There was created a new group: Linking the Antarctic Peninsula Science (LAPES). The targets of the working group are: biodiversity studies, the evolution and functioning of ecosystems on the King George Island, the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula; increasing international collaborations; introduction of the national Antarctic research programs. - AnT-ERA: Antarctic Thresholds – Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation – coordinators Charles LEE (U of Waikato, NZ) and Chun Wie Chong (International Medical U, Malaysia), Jeff Bowman – Earth Observatory, USA.
One of the targets of this working group is to create a new working group called “Resilience and adaptation of ecosystems”. - Based on the results of samplings collected from Antarctica, as well as the accumulated expertise, was obtained funding from the Ministry of Research and Innovation for further studies, as follows:
- Demonstrative experimental project PN-III-P2-2.1-PED-2016-0116 “Novel aldehyde dehydrogenase from Antarctic bacterium as a highly efficient catalyst for low temperature biosensing and biotechnologies – COLDSENSOR” (2017-2018) – Project Director – Dr. Cristina Purcărea. Project study: Cloning, expression and purification of aldehyde dehydrogenase from the Flavobacterium PL02 psychrophilic bacterium isolated from Antarctica. Measurement of thermostability and kinetic parameters at different temperatures. Purification and expression in E. Coli. Project goal: Obtaining a catalyst to be used in biosensing and biotechnology.
- Demonstrative experimental project PN-III-P2-2.1-PED-2016-1170 “Antarctic bacteria against human pathogens: a quest for new antimicrobial compounds – AntarcticPharma” (2017-2018) – Project Director – Dr. Cristian Coman. Project study: Bacterial strain characterized from point of view as biotechnological applications (cultivation, genomics, etc.). Project goal: Obtaining a bacterial extract with antimicrobial effect (antibiotic).
